Despite Court Ruling, Orange County Voters Approve Rent Control

Tuesday, despite the Court’s order to remove the Rent Control Language from the ballot, the residents voted to approve Orange County’s rent control ordinance. The ordinance was placed on the ballot before the Fifth District Court of Appeals enjoined the measure.

While the residents voted to approve the ordinance, pursuant to the Court’s order, Orange County’s Supervisor of Elections cannot certify these votes. Additionally, regardless of the outcome of Tuesday's vote, absent a successful appeal of the order, the County cannot implement or enforce the ordinance during the pendency of the litigation that was filed against the County relating to the ordinance.

The lawsuit is likely to be set for trial in the later part of summer of 2023.
