Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger LLP, sports & entertainment partner Glen A. Rothstein, was quoted in a Daily Journal article, “DOJ Files Suit Against AT&T Alleging Collusion” The November 3rd article, written by reporter Steven Crighton, looks at the allegations that AT&T Inc. subsidiary DirecTV unlawfully colluded with other cable providers to gain leverage in acquisition talks for the broadcasting rights to Dodgers baseball games, according to a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Rothstein, who is not involved in the case, said the lawsuit could have a "negative splatter effect" for a potentially looming merger between AT&T and Time Warner.
"The suit provides new ammo for those who are anti-AT&T's acquisition of Time Warner. Further consolidation will invite this kind of conduct," Rothstein said.
Rothstein noted an interesting parallel between Wednesday's filing and a series of grievances filed 30 years ago and won by the MLB Players Association. The players accused team owners of colluding to keep the cost and length of player's contracts down across the league by sharing private information with each other.
"To quote Yogi Berra, 'it's like déjà vu all over again," Rothstein said.
