Drones to Track Adults and Children that Suffer from Alzheimer’s and Autism

While police departments and law enforcement have been using drones for some time now, a police department in southern Minnesota, the Rochester Police Department, has recently acquired a new drone for a new purpose – to find missing (or wandering) persons who suffer from Alzheimer’s, autism and other related conditions and disorders. The drone was purchased as part of the Project Lifesaver initiative. Adults and children who are participants in the initiative wear transmitters that activate when they wander so that police can quickly respond to save their lives and/or protect them from injury. The drone can switch out an antenna for the camera, enabling law enforcement to see the direction of the transmitting signal. The drone’s camera has thermal, night vision, and day vision capabilities. The police department invested approximately $68,000 in the drone and the special training required for Project Lifesaver.
