Several large e-cigarette companies are beginning to brand their e-cigarette vaporizer products with detailed warning labels, without there being a legal mandate for them to do so. It is becoming increasingly frequent for e-cigarette manufacturers to include warning labels for their products that warn that such products: contain nicotine, are not a smoking cessation product, have not been tested for smoking cessation effectiveness and may be harmful to individuals with certain medical conditions. In fact, these warnings are often more detailed than the warnings found on the packaging of traditional cigarettes.
There are several theories as to why these warnings are becoming more prolific on e-cigarette products. First, such warnings may be seen as a cost effective way to help insulate e-cigarette producers from lawsuits alleging a failure to warn or misrepresentation of the products. Some believe that e-cigarette purveyors may be including the warnings to help curry favor with buyers of the products, as well as regulatory agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, which are expected to soon be able to regulate e-cigarettes and require such warning labels. A more altruistic view of the behavior is that companies do, in fact, want to play some part in educating consumers about the public health concerns associated with e-cigarette use, even if such use is part of an attempt to scale back on the use of traditional cigarettes or e-cigs.
Time will tell as to whether e-cigarette companies will continue to place such expansive warnings on their products as the regulatory bodies weigh in on the issue and scientists further study the long-term health effects associated with e-cigarette use.
