On July 6, 2023, edgeMED Healthcare, LLC (“edgeMED”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of California after discovering that confidential patient information was compromised in a recent cybersecurity incident. In this notice, edgeMED explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, treatment codes, provider names and additional information about their visits. What Caused the edgeMED Healthcare Breach?

The edgeMED Healthcare data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, edgeMED’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. edgeMED is a medical billing company that provides billing services to various healthcare facilities.

On May 26, 2023, edgeMED experienced a data security incident. In response, edgeMED secured its system and then launched an investigation into the incident. The edgeMED investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party had access to its IT network between May 20, 2023 and May 26, 2023. It was also determined that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential patient information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, edgeMED Healthcare reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, treatment codes, provider names and additional information about your visit.

On May 29, edgeMED began informing its healthcare clients about the breach. However, none of the facilities that were affected were mentioned in the edgeMED letter.
