What Caused the Edmonds School District Breach?

The Edmonds School District data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Edmonds School District’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on January 31, 2023, Edmonds detected unusual activity within its computer network. In response, Edmonds launched an investigation with the help of third-party forensics specialists.

The Edmonds School District investigation revealed that an unauthorized party was able to access information stored on its systems between January 16, 2023 and January 31, 2023. It was later confirmed that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential information belonging to current and former employees and current and former students.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Edmonds School District reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, address, financial account information, employee identification number, student number, date of birth and student records.

Previously, on February 10, 2023, Edmonds School District sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. Additional victims were subsequently discovered, prompting Edmonds to issue a subsequent notice on October 6, 2023. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
