On February 1, 2016, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) released its Winter 2015 Supervisory Insights publication. One of the primary focus areas of this Supervisory Insights mirrors much of current focus of the industry – cybersecurity. The first of three articles in the publication discussed the cyber threat landscape and the FDIC’s perspective on developing a framework for addressing such cybersecurity risks. The second article provides and overview of a relatively new, but disruptive segment of the lending market, marketplace lending. Marketplace lending is generally understood to mean the practice of pairing borrowers and lending institutions through some online platform without the involvement of a bank as the intermediary. In the article, the FDIC also highlights certain risk considerations in the marketplace lending business.
