On March 17, 2021, the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service announced that the federal income tax filing due date deadline has been extended from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. At the same time, the IRS also concurrently extended the deadline for federal income tax payments for the 2020 tax year until May 17, 2021. The extension applies to individual taxpayers, including individuals who pay self-employment tax; the extension does not apply to estimated tax payments, which are still due on April 15, 2021. Nonetheless, the IRS still urges taxpayers to file their returns as soon as possible.
At this time, the Ohio Department of Taxation has not announced an extension of the state income tax filing due date deadline, which currently remains April 15, 2021. Cleveland.com reports, however, that the extension of the state deadlines here in Ohio were announced about a week later than the federal announcement in 2020.
