On October 22, 2008, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it will "suspend enforcement" of the "Red Flag" rules, which were originally designated to take effect November 1, 2008. According to this announcement,
the rules will not be enforced by the FTC until May 1, 2009. This delay was the result of pressure from, among others, the American Medical Association and a consortium of other healthcare organizations, that complained (justifiably)
that they had no reason to familiarize themselves with FTC rules to which they are generally not subject.
