What Caused the Data Breach Affecting Gerber Life Insurance Customers?

The Gerber Life Insurance data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Gerber Life’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, MESVision uses a file-transfer program called MOVEit, which is a product of Progress Software. On August 23, 2023, MESVision learned that an unauthorized party had exploited a vulnerability within MOVEit, which allowed them to access information on MESVision’s MOVEit server.

In response, MESVision took its MOVEit server offline and initiated an investigation into the incident. This investigation confirmed that the unauthorized party accessed and acquired Gerber Life customers’ confidential information from the server on May 28, 2023 and May 31, 2023.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Gerber Life Insurance reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, date of birth, Social Security number, subscriber ID, policy number, group number and claim number.

On November 15, 2023, MESVision sent out data breach letters on behalf of Gerber Life. These letters were sent to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident and should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
