Japan is widely perceived to be one of the least corrupt countries in the world. Transparency International ranked Japan as the 20th least corrupt country out of 180 in the most recent Corruption Perceptions Index. The World Justice Project’s 2017–2018 Rule of Law Index ranked Japan as the 8th least corrupt country out of 113, and the US State Department has characterised the direct exchange of cash for favours from Japanese government officials as “extremely rare”.
