I am pleased to report that the Supreme Court of North Carolina has selected Grant Buckner as its 17th Clerk of Court.
Grant is no stranger to the appellate courts. Early on in his career, he clerked for Judge (and later Justice) Bob N. Hunter at the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. He then clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Martin.
For the past few years, however, Grant has been doing yeoman’s work founding and then leading the Supreme Court’s Office of Administrative Counsel. In that role, Grant has worn many hats including: advising the Supreme Court on court rules and amendments (including my personal passion—the NC Appellate Rules), publishing codifications of 17 different rule sets, helping to manage the Supreme Court’s termination-of-parental-rights cases, and assisting the Court and Chief Justice in responding to emergencies affecting the courts, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Grant will bring many strengths to this role—not least of which are his attention to detail, ability to think outside of the box, and commitment to the Court as an institution.
