The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) has cited Spirit Aerosystems, Inc. (“SAI”) for alleged violations involving hexavalent chromium.

SAI is described as a Kansas aircraft manufacturer.

OSHA investigators allegedly determined that the defense contractor exposed employees to airborne concentrations of hexavalent chromium above the permissible exposure limit. Further the company allegedly failed to:

  • Implement sufficient feasible engineering and work practice controls to prevent exposure
  • Conduct monitoring or sampling
  • Provide training
  • Require employees to properly remove potentially contaminated personal protective equipment and clothing before leaving the sanding area

A $194,006 penalty is proposed.

SAI has 15 days from receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s Area Director, or contest the findings before the Independent Occupation Safety and Health Review Commission.
