A triumvirate of bills that would establish California’s first-ever groundwater regulation law are now awaiting Gov. Jerry Brown’s signature. The bills, passed by the state Legislature on August 29, would establish the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. To address the ongoing drought, the Act is meant to provide local and regional agencies with the authority to sustainably manage groundwater basins within their own jurisdictions.
The Act has drawn both praise and criticism from different interests, as well as both political parties. If the bills become law, the Act will have a huge impact on agencies — especially counties. Learn more about these impacts in this BB&K Legal Alert.
