Independent Living Systems, LLC Notifies More Than 4 Million People of Recent Data Breach

On March 14, 2023, Independent Living Systems, LLC (“ILS”) filed a notice of data breach with the Maine Attorney General after confirming that an unauthorized party was able to access sensitive patient information stored on the company’s computer network. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names, Social Security numbers and protected health information. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, ILS began sending out data breach notification letters to the more than four million individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

What We Know So Far About the Independent Living Systems Breach

The available information regarding the Independent Living Systems breach comes from the company’s filing with the Maine Attorney General. According to this source, on July 5, 2022, ILS employees noticed that some of the company’s computer systems were inaccessible. In response, the company launched an investigation into the incident with the assistance of third-party data security specialists.

The ILS investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access certain files on the company’s IT network between June 30, 2022 and July 5, 2023. ILS later determined that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential patient information.

Upon discovering that sensitive patient data was made available to an unauthorized party, Independent Living Systems began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number and protected health information.

On March 14, 2023, Independent Living Systems sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
