The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will hold an informational webinar on April 16, 2024, on the recently released 2023 Billion-Ton Report (BT23), an assessment of renewable carbon resources potentially available in the United States. BETO notes that BT23 shows that the United States could sustainably triple its production of biomass to more than one billion tons per year and highlights the importance of diversifying biomass resources to support the U.S. bioeconomy. During the webinar, speakers will cover key findings of BT23 and discuss its significance and impact to the economy, environment, and industry. Other topics will include:

  • Feedstock data and market scenarios;
  • BT23 challenges;
  • Alignment with White House priorities and goals; and
  • A demonstration of the publicly available BT23 data portal on the Bioenergy Knowledge Discovery Framework.

Webinar speakers will include:

  • Dr. Valerie Sarisky-Reed, BETO Director;
  • Dr. Mark Elless, BETO Technology Manager, Renewable Carbon Resources;
  • Dr. Matthew Langholtz, ORNL Natural Resource Economist; and
  • Maggie Davis, ORNL Research and Development Scientist.

Questions can be submitted via e-mail prior to the webinar. More information about BT23 is available in our April 2, 2024, blog item.
