What Caused the Data Breach Affecting Kyocera AVX?

The Kyocera AVX data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Kyocera’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on March 30, 2023, Kyocera was the target of a cyberattack targeting some of the company’s servers in Greenville and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Portions of Kyocera’s computer network were encrypted as a result of the attack.

In response, Kyocera launched an investigation into the incident with the help of third-party data security specialists. Kyocera also notified law enforcement.

The Kyocera investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party gained access to, and removed information from, certain systems between February 16, 2023 and March 30, 2023. It was later determined that some of the compromised files contained confidential information belonging to certain consumers.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Kyocera AVX reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Kyocera completed this process in September 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On October 30, 2023, Kyocera AVX sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
