Lead/OSHA Enforcement: Kansas City Missouri Foundry Issued Citations

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) cited Martin Foundry Co. for alleged violations.

Martin Foundry Co. is stated to be a foundry located in Kansas City, Missouri.

OSHA is stated to have cited the company for five alleged repeated and seven identified alleged serious violations.

An OSHA inspection is stated to have been initiated after the Missouri Department of Health identified a Foundry employee with an elevated blood lead level.

Alleged violations are stated to have included:

  • Failure to provide respirators
  • Failure to provide adequate protective clothing and training
  • Use of compressed air to blow lead dust off clothing
  • Failure to notify company laundering workers’ clothing of potential lead exposure
  • Allowing workers to eat and drink where lead was present
  • Failure to provide shower facilities for employees to remove lead dust prior to leaving
  • Employee lead over-exposure
  • Lack of clean changing rooms
  • Not providing clean, dry protective clothing at least weekly
  • Failure to train workers on lead hazards
  • Absence of separate lunch facilities to prevent lead ingestion

OSHA’s proposed penalty is in the amount of $119,000.

The company has fifteen days from receipt of the citations and proposed penalties to comply, request a conference with OSHA’s Area Director, or contest the findings before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
