If you are in Houston next Thursday, September 15, and want to hear three of the city’s top compliance practitioners, I invite you to join myself and the members of the Greater Houston Business and Ethics Roundtable (GHBER) from 8:30-11am. We will be holding the event at the Waste Management offices, 1021 Fannin Street Houston, TX 77002.

We are pleased to have Vanessa Ros  si, FCPA Due Diligence Counsel at Baker Hughes, Inc., Garrett Cornelison, Chief Compliance Officer at Quanta Services, Inc., and Diana Urelius, Assistant Secretary & Senior Compliance Manager at Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America Inc. I will be moderating this panel and as each of the panelists works for a company with a mature compliance program, we will use that as a basis for our discussion. As compliance programs continue to mature, they are challenged to find new ways to integrate the compliance function with the business while continuing to provide robust protection to the organization. We will discuss what these companies have done, what compliance initiatives they have planned for 2017, and how your compliance program can continue to mature and grow.

If you are not aware of GHBER, it is the premier compliance group for greater Houston area lawyers and compliance professionals. Join us at the first class offices of Waste Management next Thursday for an informative session. Details and registration information can be found by clicking here.

If you are not going to be in Houston next Thursday, I have an alternative option for you as the Red Flag Group (RFG) is hosting another webinar in its three part series on supply chain risk management. As I will be chairing the GHBER panel, my RFG colleagues Chris Sidnik and Jared Connors will be hosting you. The topic this month is gathering materials from your suppliers to better understand their business practices. The webinar is at no cost to attend. You can find out more information and obtain registration details by clicking here.

Given the reputational damage the textile supply company Welspun India Ltd. put Target Corp. in after it appeared Welspun had fraudulently claimed that it sold highly prized Egyptian cotton made products, as reported in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). Target had to cut ties with the company and “Welspun’s stock price plunged after the news, and trading in the shares was halted temporarily. Wal-Mart and other retailers followed, saying they were investigating whether the sheets they buy from Welspun contain Egyptian cotton.” This RFG webinar will serve to re-emphasizes the damage your supply chain can sustain to a purchaser.

If time-shifted learning is more to your liking, I would invite you to listen to my  12 O’Clock High podcast. It focuses on business leadership and has received favorable reviews and comments since it went live earlier this summer. Head over ITunes or my podcast site and check it out. Three of my most recent podcasts, hosted by Richard Lummis, are as follows:

Episode 13 – Business Leader as a Project Sponsor

One of the skills you may be called upon as a business leader is the initiation, integration or enhancement of a new solution into an organization. As a business leader, you may either lead such a project on a day-to-day basis or you may take the role of project sponsor, while delegating the day-to-day running of the project. We consider how a business leader can be an effective project sponsor. Check out the podcast by clicking here.

Episode 14 – Business Leaders and Team Conflict

One of the things any business leader must manage is team conflict. In this episode we dissect a recent Harvard Business Review (HBR) article, entitled “How to Preempt Team Conflict. The authors posit a five step process which allows you to pre-empt conflict before it begins, rather than try to clean it up after the fact. We work through each step and provide technics to avoid conflict before it begins. Check out the podcast by clicking here.

Episode 15 – Business Leadership Through a Remarkable Communication Experience

Business leadership requires you to think through when trying to communicate the message of compliance or the specifics of your message to your employees. Jerod Morris, Vice President (VP) of Rainmaker Digital has developed a four-step process which facilitates a remarkable communication experience. We adapt it for the business leader. It is yet another way that the tools of social media can be adopted and adapted by a business leader to further communicate within an organization. We will look at each element and discuss how you can use them in your communications skill set. Check out the podcast by clicking here.

Finally, later today I will post the top review of the week’s comings and goings of all things FCPA, compliance and ethics related in my This Week in FCPA podcast that I host with Mr. Translations himself, Jay Rosen. We provide a breezy look the week’s top stories, in a 30 minute (or less) wrap up of the week’s top stories, all with our unique take on them. This week we will talk whistleblowers, the stunning summer of FCPA enforcements, the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and what it means for the compliance practitioner and, finally, we will reveal our Super Bowl LI picks. As always the podcast can be found on this site.
