On June 23, 2023, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (“LSSI”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine, updating victims of a 2022 incident that leaked their confidential information. News of the Lutheran Social Services of Illinois data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine. According to this source, on January 27, 2022, LSSI learned that its computer network was the target of a ransomware attack. In response, LSSI disabled the affected portions of its network and then launched an investigation with the assistance of outside cybersecurity professionals.

The LSSI investigation confirmed that an unauthorized actor was able to access its computer network between December 31, 2021 and January 27, 2022. It was also determined that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential consumer information.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. LSSI completed this process on December 28, 2022. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On January 25, 2023, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
