The Mexican government presented a civil lawsuit on Aug. 4, 2021, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts against a number of U.S. gun manufacturers seeking: 1) damages and monetary compensation to Mexico, 2) force manufacturers to develop reasonable standards for monitoring and impose sanctions to distributors, 3) incorporation of mechanisms of weapon controls to prevent use of organized crime, and 4) payment of advertising campaigns to reduce gun smuggling.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that this action is brought as a part of the policy to reduce homicides in the country by modifying the business practices of the manufacturers. Also, the Ministry indicated that Mexico's government has been in talks with the U.S. administration to address this situation.
