What’s happening • Many hydrogen use cases are in the transportation sectors: autos, trucks, rail and shipping. Aviation uses are in development. • Under the US Inflation Reduction Act, coupled with the Hydrogen Hubs initiative, more investments and hydrogen projects are expected in the Americas. • Hydrogen patents in the automotive sector continue to grow at a high rate (around 400 patent families in 2021 at the EPO). • The U.S. Department of Energy monitors over 1,500 patent family filings per year in hydrogen and fuel-cell applications.
