On July 20, 2023, MSX International Inc. (“MSXI”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after discovering that an unauthorized party was able to access—and potentially remove—confidential consumer data stored on the company’s computer network. In this notice, MSXI explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names and Social Security numbers. Upon completing its investigation, MSXI began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from MSX International Inc., it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. As we’ve discussed in previous posts, hackers need little more than your Social Security number to steal your identity, which is why breaches like this present such a risk. However, there are steps you can take to mitigate these risks. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft as well as discuss your legal options following the MSX International data breach.

What Caused the MSX International Breach?

The MSX International data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, MSXI’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on February 6, 2023, MSXI detected suspicious activity within its IT network. In response, MSXI removed the unauthorized access, notified law enforcement, and launched an investigation with the assistance of third-party data security specialists.

The MSXI investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party gained access to, and may have removed information from, certain MSXI systems between February 2, 2023, and February 6, 2023. The company later determined that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, MSX International reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. On May 1, 2023, MSXI completed this process. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On July 20, 2023, MSX International sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident.
