New (2021) United States Electricity Generating Capacity Additions: U.S. Energy Information Administration Report Projects Renewable Energy Will Account for the Largest Share

The United States Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) issued a January 11th report titled:

Renewables Account for Most New U.S. Electricity Generating Capacity in 2021 (“Report”)

Projected planned United States utility-scale electricity generating capacity additions for 2021 are discussed.

The Report states that EIA’s “latest inventory of electricity generators, developers and power plant owners plan for 39.7 gigawatts (GW) of new electricity generating capacity to start commercial operation in 2021.”

Solar energy is projected to account for the largest share of new capacity. Solar percentage share is projected at 39%. Wind is projected at 31%.

By way of summary, the EIA Report notes:

  • Solar photovoltaics (the addition of 15.4 GW of capacity in 2021 will surpass the prior record of a 12 GW increase)
  • Wind (12.2 GW of wind capacity is scheduled to come on line in 2021)
  • Natural gas (Natural gas capacity additions are reported at 6.6 GW with combined-cycle generators accounting for 3.9 GW)
  • Battery storage (capacity of utility-scale battery storage is projected to more than quadruple to 4.3 GW of battery power capacity additions)
