It was a big week in politics throughout the country as Super Tuesday primary results rolled in. In North Carolina, this week began with candidates making their final pleas to voters across the state as they made their way to the polls to cast their first ballots of the 2024 election. Many of those same candidates ended their week back in Raleigh as a handful of state boards and interim oversight committees met to close out the week.

GENERAL ELECTION CONTESTS

With Super Tuesday now in the rear-view mirror, it is now full speed ahead to November for candidates who made it through their primary contests. Some primary races were determined by just a handful of votes while others won by landslides. Below, we lay out the candidates you can expect to see on the ballot in North Carolina this November, from US President to the state legislature.

US PRESIDENT

The race in the presidential primaries in North Carolina remained largely uneventful. President Joe Biden easily won every county statewide and former President Donald Trump easily cruised to victory in the Republican primary, setting up a rematch of the 2020 presidential contest.

US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

In North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, incumbent Congressman Rep. Don Davis (D) will defend his seat against challenger Laurie Buckhout (R) and third-party challenger Tom Bailey (L).

In District 2, incumbent Congresswoman Rep. Deborah Ross (D) will defend her seat against challengers Alan Swain (R) and Michael Dublin (G).

District 3 will see incumbent Congressman Rep. Greg Murphy (R), who ran unopposed in the primary, up against third-party challenger Gheorghe Cormos (L).

In District 4, incumbent Congresswoman Rep. Valerie Foushee (D), who was unopposed in the primary, will face Erick Blankenburg (R) and Guy Meilleur (L) in the general.

Longtime incumbent Congresswoman Rep. Virginia Foxx (R) handedly beat her only primary opponent and will face Chuck Hubbard (D) in the District 5 general.

In North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District, the primary winner will determine the new representative of this open seat since only Republican candidates filed to run. This race will head to a runoff on May 14 between Addison McDowell and Mark Walker.

District 7 will see incumbent Congressman Rep. David Rouzer (R) go up against challenger Marlando Pridgen (D).

After successfully making it out of a six-candidate primary race, Mark Harris (R) will go up against Justin Dues (D) in the contest to represent North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District.

In District 9, incumbent Congressman Rep. Richard Hudson (R) will defend his seat against Nigel William Bristow (D).

Pat Harrigan (R), Ralph R. Scott, Jr. (D), and Steven Feldman (L) will compete for the open seat in North Carolina’s 10th Congressional District.

Incumbent Congressman Rep. Chuck Edwards (R) will defend his District 11 seat against current state House member Caleb Rudow (D) in November.

In District 12, incumbent Congresswoman Rep. Alma Adams (D) will defend her seat against challenger Addul Ali (R).

In North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District, a runoff is needed to determine which Republican candidate will go up against Frank Pierce (D), who ran unopposed in the primary, in November. 14 candidates filed to run in the Republican primary for this open congressional seat. Kelly Daughtry and Brad Knott will go up against each other in the May 14 runoff in hopes of securing the party’s nomination.

Lastly, in the newly drawn 14th Congressional District, current state House Speaker Representative Tim Moore (R) overwhelming beat out his two primary opponents to head to the November general election, where he will go up against Pam Genant (D).

NC GOVERNOR

North Carolina’s current Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson (R) and Attorney General Josh Stein (D) are making bids for the Governor’s mansion in November given that current Governor Roy Cooper (D) is term limited. Mike Ross (L) and Wayne Turner (G) will also compete for the state’s top job in the general.

NC LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

With current Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson making a bid for Governor, the Republican primary drew 11 candidates to the race. Two candidates rose to the top of the crowded field, Hal Weatherman, former chief of staff to former Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, and Jim O’Neill, the Forsyth County district attorney, however, a runoff will be necessary to determine which of the two candidates competes in the general. Current state Senator and daughter of former Governor Jim Hunt, Rachel Hunt (D), secured her place as the nominee in November. Dee Watson (L) will compete against the winner of the Republican runoff race and Hunt.

NC ATTORNEY GENERAL

Current US Congressman Rep. Dan Bishop (R), who opted to run for Attorney General rather than seek another term in congress, ran unopposed in the primary and will face current state Senator Jeff Jackson (D) in the general.

NC AUDITOR

Incumbent State Auditor Jessica Holmes (D), who was recently appointed to the post following the resignation on longtime incumbent Beth Wood, ran unopposed in the primary. Holmes will face Bob Drach (L) in the general, as well as the winner of the Republican runoff in May. Jack Clark and Dave Boliek topped the six-candidate primary field and will now compete for their party’s nomination.

NC COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE

Longtime incumbent Commissioner Steve Troxler (R), who survived the race against his lone primary challenger, will go up against Sarah Taber (D) and Sean Haugh (L) in November.

NC COMMISSIONER OF INSURANCE

Incumbent Commissioner Mike Causey (R), who faced two primary challengers Tuesday night, will go up against current state Senator Natasha Marcus (D), who also came out on top in her primary, in the general.

NC COMMISSIONER OF LABOR

With current Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson (R) deciding not to seek reelection in the fall, four Republican primary candidates competed in the contest Tuesday night. Luke Farley (R) came out on top and will face the lone Democrat to file in the race, Braxton Winston.

NC SECRETARY OF STATE

Incumbent Secretary of State Elaine Marshall (D), who has served in the position since 1997, will go up against challenger Chad Brown (R) in November.

NC SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION

In one of the most talked about upsets from North Carolina’s primary election, Michele Morrow (R) won the Republican party’s nomination over incumbent Superintendent Catherine Truitt. Morrow will face primary winner Maurice (Mo) Green (D) in the general election.

NC TREASURER

With current state Treasurer Dale Folwell (R) opting to instead run for Governor, Brad Briner (R) successfully beat out two primary opponents to head to the general election in November where he will face current state House member Wesley Harris (D).

Senate District 01: Incumbent Sen. Bobby Hanig (R-Currituck) against Susan Harman-Scott (D).

Senate District 02: Incumbent Sen. Norman Sanderson (R-Pamlico) against Tare Davis (D) and Maria Cormos (L).

Senate District 03: Left vacant by current Sen. Jim Perry (R-Lenoir), who decided not to run for reelection, this seat will be left to either Bob Brinson (R) or Charles Dudley (D).

Senate District 04: Incumbent Sen. Buck Newton (R-Wilson) will face former state representative Raymond Smith Jr. (D).

Senate District 05: Incumbent Sen. Kandie Smith (D-Pitt) against Alexander Paschall (R).

Senate District 06: Incumbent Sen. Michael Lazzara (R-Onslow) against Andi Morrow (D).

Senate District 07: Incumbent Sen. Michael Lee (R-New Hanover) against David Hill (D) and John Evans (L).

Senate District 08: The powerful Rules Chairman, incumbent Sen. Bill Rabon (R-Brunswick) will face challenger Katherine Randall (D).

Senate District 09: Incumbent Sen. Brent Jackson (R-Sampson) against Jamie Campbell Bowles (D).

Senate District 10: Incumbent Sen. Benton Sawrey (R-Johnson) against challengers Felicia Baxter (D) and Christopher Session (L).

Senate District 11: Incumbent Sen. Lisa Barnes (R-Nash) against James Mercer (D).

Senate District 12: Incumbent Sen. Jim Burgin (R-Harnett) against Tanya White Anderson (D).

Senate District 13: Incumbent Sen. Lisa Grafstein (D-Wake) will face Scott Lassiter (R) and Susan Hogarth (L).

Senate District 14: Incumbent Senate Minority Leader Sen. Dan Blue (D) against Angela McCarty (R) and Sammie Brook (L).

Senate District 15: Incumbent Sen. Jay Chaudhuri (D-Wake) against David Bankert (R) and Kat McDonald (L).

Senate District 16: Incumbent Sen. Gale Adcock (D-Wake) is running unopposed.

Senate District 17: Incumbent Sen. Sydney Batch (D-Wake) against Patrick Bowersox (L).

Senate District 18: With incumbent Sen. Mary Wills Bode (D-Granville) deciding not to seek reelection, current state Rep. Terence Everitt (D-Wake) will go up against Ashlee Bryan Adams (R) and Brad Hessel (L) in the general.

Senate District 19: Incumbent Sen. Val Applewhite (D-Cumberland) against Semone Pemberton (R) and Steven Swinton (L).

Senate District 20: Incumbent Sen. Natalie Murdock (D-Durham) against Christopher Partain (R).

Senate District 22: In a surprise upset, Sophia Chitlik (D) ousted longtime incumbent Sen. Mike Woodard (D-Durham) and will go up against Ray Ubinger (L).

Senate District 23: Incumbent Sen. Graig Meyer (D-Orange) against Laura Pichardo (R).

Senate District 24: Incumbent Sen. Danny Britt (R-Robeson) against Kathy Batt (D).

Senate District 25: Incumbent Sen. Amy Galey (R-Alamance) against Donna Vanhook (D).

Senate District 26: Incumbent Senate President Pro Tempore, Sen. Phil Berger (R-Rockingham), will face challenger Steve Luking (D) in the general.

Senate District 27: Incumbent Sen. Michael Garrett (D-Guilford) against Paul Schumacher (R).

Senate District 42: With incumbent Sen. Rachel Hunt (D-Mecklenburg) running for lieutenant governor, Woodson Bradley (D) will face primary winner Stacie McGinn (R) in the general.

Senate District 43: Incumbent Sen. Brad Overcash (R-Gaston) against Corey Creech (D).

House District 67: With current Rep. Wayne Sasser (R-Stanly) retiring at the end of his term, primary winner Cody Huneycutt (R) will face Daniel Quick (D) in November.

House District 68: Incumbent Rep. David Willis (R-Union) against Cristal Robinson (D).

House District 69: Incumbent Rep. Dean Arp (R-Union) against Leigh Coulter (D).

House District 83: With current Rep. Kristin Baker (R-Cabarrus) opting not to seek reelection this year, primary winner Grant Campbell (R) will face Joanne Chesley (D) in November.

House District 84: Incumbent Rep. Jeffrey McNeely (R-Iredell) against Chris Gillbert (D).

House District 85: Incumbent Rep. Dudley Greene (R-McDowell) against John Ford (D).

House District 86: Incumbent Rep. Hugh Blackwell (R-Burke) against Gena Singleton (D).

House District 87: The powerful House Rules Chairman, and presumed incoming Speaker of the House, Rep. Destin Hall (R- Caldwell) will face challenger Barbara Kirby (D) in the general.

House District 88: Incumbent Rep. Mary Belk (D-Mecklenburg) is running unopposed.

House District 89: Incumbent Rep. Mitchell Setzer (R-Catawba) against Greg Cranford (D).

House District 90: Incumbent Rep. Sarah Stevens (R-Surry) against Ken Badgett (D).

House District 91: Incumbent Rep. Kyle Hall (R-Stokes) against Vivian Fulk (D).

House District 92: Incumbent Rep. Terry Brown (D-Mecklenburg) is running unopposed.

House District 95: With current Rep. Grey Mills (R-Iredell) making a run for US Congress instead of reelection to his seat in the state House, Richard Todd Carver (R) and Mike Robinson (D) will go up against each other in the general election to replace Mills.

House District 96: Incumbent Rep. Jay Adams (R-Catawba) against Elizabeth (Eli) Glynn (D).

House District 97: Incumbent Rep. Jason Saine (R-Lincoln) is running unopposed.

House District 98: With current Rep. John Bradford (R-Mecklenburg) making a run for US Congress, Melinda Bales (R), who ran unopposed in the primary, will face Beth Gardner Helfrich (D).

House District 99: Incumbent Rep. Nasif Majeed (D-Mecklenburg) against Isaiah Payne (R) and Rob Yates (L).

House District 100: Current Rep. John Autry (D-Mecklenburg) is retiring at the end of his current term. Julia Greenfield (D) is running unopposed to fill the vacant seat.

House District 101: Incumbent Rep. Carolyn Logan (D-Mecklenburg) is running unopposed.

House District 102: Incumbent Rep. Becky Carney (D-Mecklenburg) is running unopposed.

House District 103: Incumbent Rep. Laura Budd (D-Mecklenburg) against Joshua Niday (R).

House District 104: Incumbent Rep. Brandon Lofton (D-Mecklenburg) against Krista Bokhair (R).

House District 105: Incumbent Rep. Tricia Cotham (R-Mecklenburg) against Nicole Sidman (D).

House District 106: Incumbent Rep. Carla Cunningham (D-Mecklenburg), who beat her lone primary challenger Tuesday night, will run unopposed in the general.

House District 107: Current Rep. Kelly Alexander (D-Mecklenburg) is retiring at the end of his current term. Aisha Dew (D) is running unopposed in the contest to fill this vacant seat.

House District 108: Incumbent Rep. John Torbett (R-Gaston) against Sydnie Hutchinson (D).

House District 109: Incumbent Rep. Donnie Loftis (R-Gaston) against Pam Morgenstern (D).

House District 110: Incumbent Rep. Kelly Hastings (R-Gaston) against Justin (JW) Matthews (D).

House District 111: With current House Speaker Rep. Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) running for congress, Paul Scott (R) and Frances Rollinson Webber (D) will go against each other in the race to fill this vacant seat in the general.

House District 112: Redistricting left this seat open with no incumbent, paving the way for Jordan Lopez (D) to run unopposed.

House District 113: Incumbent Rep. Jake Johnson (R-Polk) against Michelle Antalec (D).

House District 114: Incumbent Rep. Eric Ager (D-Buncombe) against Sherry Higgins (R).

House District 115: Incumbent Rep. Lindsey Prather (D-Buncombe) against Ruth Smith (R).

House District 116: Current Rep. Caleb Rudow (D-Buncombe) is making a run for US Congress this year, opening the door for the return for former state representative Brian Turner (D), who is running unopposed for this seat.

House District 117: Incumbent Rep. Jennifer Balkcom (R-Henderson) against Steve Martinez (D).

House District 118: Incumbent Rep. Mark Pless (R-Haywood) against Evelyn Davidson (D).

House District 119: Incumbent Rep. Mike Clampitt (R-Swain) against Mark Burrows (D).

House District 120: Incumbent Rep. Karl Gillespie (R-Macon) against Nancy Curtis (D).
