What Caused the Data Breach Affecting PennyMac Loan Services?

The PennyMac Loan Services data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. Until then, PennyMac’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides limited information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, the incident involved an unauthorized party being able to access certain files that contained information consumers had provided to PennyMac. However, it cannot be confirmed whether hackers targeted PennyMac’s system, and it may be that the hackers orchestrated the attack against a PennyMac vendor that had been provided the information by PennyMac.

Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, PennyMac Loan Services reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, Social Security number and financial account information.

These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised. According to the Texas Attorney General, these notices went out in the mail to all 1,788 Texas victims of the PennyMac data breach. Of course, there are likely additional victims throughout the country.
