What Caused the Premier Dermatology Data Breach?

The Premier Dermatology data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. And, unfortunately, Premier Dermatology’s filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights provides only limited information on what led up to the breach.

According to this source, the Premier Dermatology data breach was the result of a
Hacking / IT incident” involving an email account. While it is certainly possible that the affected email account belonged to Premier Dermatology, that isn’t necessarily the case. This is because Premier Dermatology may be reporting a breach on behalf of a third-party vendor.

Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Premier Dermatology reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On April 26, 2024, Premier Dermatology reported to the HHS-OCR. Typically, this is when companies send out data breach letters to anyone affected by the recent data security incident. However, the timeline for the Premier Dermatology breach may be different. Regardless, these letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
