On November 6, 2023, Prestige Care Inc. filed a notice of data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights after discovering that an unauthorized party accessed the company’s computer network. In this notice, Prestige Care explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical information, and health insurance information. Upon completing its investigation, Prestige Care began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

If you receive a data breach notification from Prestige Care Inc., it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. As we’ve discussed in previous posts, hackers routinely seek out companies they believe to possess Social Security numbers because this information can easily be used to commit identity theft and other frauds. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft, as well as discuss your legal options following the Prestige Care data breach. What Caused the Prestige Care Data Breach?

The Prestige Care data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Prestige Care’s filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights provides some important information on what led up to the breach. Prestige Care also posted a “Notice of Data Event” on its home page.

According to these sources, on September 7, 2023, Prestige Care detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, Prestige Care launched an investigation into the incident. Ultimately, this investigation confirmed that the Prestige Care network had been infected with malware, preventing access to certain files on the system.

The Prestige Care investigation also confirmed that the unauthorized party may have had access to certain files containing personal and health information on September 7, 2023.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Prestige Care reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which residents and employees were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, date of birth, medical information, and health insurance information.

On November 6, 2023, Prestige Care sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
