On July 11, 2023, Choice Hotels International, the parent company of Radisson Hotels Americas, confirmed that Radisson guest information was leaked related to the MOVEit vulnerability. Choice Hotels is still conducting its investigation into the incident and does not yet have a list of the data types that were compromised. However, once Choice Hotels identifies which Radisson guests were affected, it will begin sending out data breach notification letters.

If you receive a data breach notification from Choice Hotels or Radisson Hotels Americas, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. As we’ve discussed in previous posts, companies have a legal obligation to protect consumer information in their care. When a company’s negligence causes or contributes to a data breach, the company may be financially liable to victims through a data breach lawsuit. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft as well as discuss your legal options following the Radisson Hotels data breach.

What Caused the Data Breach Affecting Radisson Hotel Guests?

The Radisson Hotels data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Radisson’s parent company, Choice Hotels, provided some background information. According to a recent news source, on July 10, 2023, a spokesperson for Choice Hotels confirmed that the MOVEit vulnerability resulted in certain Radisson hotel guests’ personal information being compromised.

Evidently, Radisson was informed by its vendor that bad actors exploited the MOVEit vulnerability, gaining access to “a limited number of guest records.” However, Choice Hotels notes that it is still investigating the incident and has not yet released a list of the compromised data types.

Choice Hotels also indicated that it is in the process of sending out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of which information of theirs was compromised.

Previously, on May 31, 2023, Progress Software, the creator of MOVEit, announced a zero-day vulnerability within the MOVEit software. A zero-day vulnerability is one in which hackers find and exploit the vulnerability before the developer of the software knows of the issue, meaning the developer has zero days to come up with a solution.
