Supreme Court finalists announced. The Judicial Department announced three finalists for Chief Justice Rice’s seat on the Colorado Supreme Court: Maria Berkenkotter, Karen L. Brody, and Carlos A. Samour, Jr. The Denver Post interviewed attorney Chris Jackson in discussing the candidates’ backgrounds.

Aspen bag fee doesn’t violate TABOR. In a 4-3 decision, the Colorado Supreme Court upheld Aspens’ $0.20 grocery bag charge after concluding that it was a fee, rather than a tax, and therefore not subject to the Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights.

Civil Rights Commission is re-authorized. Governor Hickenlooper signed HB 18-1256 into law, a bipartisan bill re-authorizing the Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The CCRC is a party in Masterpiece Cakeshop, US Supreme Court case involving a Colorado baker who refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding.

Voters will weigh in on redistricting proposal. The General Assembly has decided to put a new redistricting measure to the voters. This November, Coloradans will be asked to vote on whether they support a proposal putting Congressional and state-legislative redistricting into the hands of an independent commission.
