Thailand Has Joined The Madrid Protocol, Effective November 7, 2017

On August 7, 2017, Thailand acceded to the Madrid Protocol. The change will take effect on November 7, 2017, allowing:
• holders of existing International Registrations based on applications or registrations for trademarks outside of Thailand to designate extensions of protection to Thailand instead of filing separate national applications;
• applicants for new International Registrations based on applications or registrations for trademarks outside of Thailand to designate extensions of protection to Thailand instead of filing separate national applications; and
• applicants based in Thailand or otherwise able to claim Thailand as a country in which they have an established physical presence (ie, “real and effective industrial or commercial establishment”) to obtain International Registrations designating any of the 115 other jurisdictions that are members, including the United States and the European Union.
