The Legislature Will Soon Be Back In Town And Facing Imminent Deadlines

On January 4, 2024, the California legislature will reconvene for the second year of its current biennium.  Joint Rule 51(a)(4).  January opens the new year with some important legislative deadlines.

January 12 is the last day on which policy committees may hear and report to fiscal committees fiscal bills introduced in their house in 2023 (aka "two-year bills").  Joint Rule 61(b)(1).

January 19  is the last day on which any committee may hear and report to the floor bills introduced in that house in 2023 (J.R. 61(b)(2)). 

January 31  is the last day on which each house may pass bills introduced in that house in 2023.  Cal. Const. Art. IV, § 10(c)) and Joint Rule 61(b)(3).  

In January, we will also see new bills being introduced.  The deadline for new bill introductions is February 16, 2024.  Joint Rule  54(a) & 61(b)(4).
