Last week the Trotter chatted with her partner and fellow blog editor, Nick O’Donnell. Nick’s practice focuses primarily on complex civil litigation, for which he has appeared before the Supreme Court of the United States. See Guelph Treasure Art Restitution Case Media Coverage. Nick’s blog, the Art Law Report, covers legal issues in the museum and visual arts communities, one of his areas of expertise.
Nick and the Trotter discussed the complaint filed by the New York Attorney General on November 6, 2020 against Sotheby’s and whether the art industry is to expect further scrutiny and enforcement action in light of the U.S. Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2020 ("AMLA"). The AMLA is part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 which became law on January 1, 2021 after the Congress overrode President Trump’s veto. For more insights from Nick on the issue of money laundering challenges in the art market see U.S. Senate Report Takes a Swing at Money Laundering in the Art Market But Comes up Empty on Substance.
On Nick’s recommendation, the Trotter was delighted to discover a new museum, the Lenbachhaus, to virtually explore on New Year’s Eve. See Lenbachhaus - Collection Online and Lenbachhaus - Audio guide. She was also excited to discover that Nick shares her love for Boston’s quirky Grande Dame, The Isabella Gardner Museum. The Trotter’s most recent guilty pleasure are the digital series featuring Neighborhood Salon Luminary artists bringing fresh perspectives to the Gardner Museum’s historic collection through commissioned new works. See, e.g, Will Dailey video @ Luminary Lens | Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Ms. Isabella would be proud! The Trotter has also paid virtual visits to Nick’s favorite gallery Hauser & Wirth and museum MoMA in NYC.
