Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • President Joe Biden will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in San Francisco during Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
  • Congress must pass legislation to fund the government before current funding expires Friday night.
  • House Republicans plan to take up a “laddered” continuing resolution with programs expiring on different timelines, but its passage is far from certain.

HOUSE

  • The House will be in session today through Thursday, with Republicans attempting tomorrow to pass their “laddered” resolution to extend funding for some agencies into January and others into February.
  • The House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday will hold a hearing on worldwide threats with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Chris Wray, and National Counterterrorism Center Director Christine Abizaid.
  • Also Wednesday, the Financial Services Committee will hold an oversight hearing with senior officials from the Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, National Credit Union Administration, and Office of the Comptroller of Currency.

SENATE

  • The Senate will be in session today through Thursday, continuing to take up Biden’s judicial nominees and beginning procedural votes this evening on a continuing resolution.
  • Tuesday, the Senate Banking Committee will hold an oversight hearing with the same panel of prudential regulators as the House Financial Services Committee.
  • Wednesday, the Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing on artificial intelligence.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Today, Biden will congratulate the Vegas Golden Knights on winning the 2023 Stanley Cup, and host a bilateral meeting with President Joko Widodo of Indonesia.
  • The rest of the week, the president will be in San Francisco to host representatives from the 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies for APEC Economic Leaders’ Week.
  • Wednesday, Biden will meet with his Chinese counterpart, Xi, in San Francisco.
