Sustainable battery development and production is key to the EU’s clean energy and climate neutrality objectives, as they are expected to contribute to the uptake of electric vehicles. For this reason, the use of batteries is set to exponentially increase as a result of the EU Green Deal initiatives . On 10 December 2020, the EU Commission (the EC) adopted a proposal for a new Regulation concerning batteries and waste batteries2 (the Proposed Regulation), with Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commission’s vice-president in charge of foresight and inter-institutional relations, describing the proposal as containing the “mandatory requirements for the greenest, safest and most sustainable batteries on this planet”.
