What Caused the Trinity Universal Data Breach?

The Trinity Universal data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, TUIC’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. TUIC also issued a press release detailing the incident.

According to these sources, TUIC recently learned that backup tapes went missing from one of the company’s offices in the process of a move from one location to another. The tapes were kept in a padlocked safe, which went missing between July 7, 2023 and July 10, 2023. Upon learning about the incident, TUIC began an investigation and tried to locate the lockbox; however, TUIC’s efforts were unsuccessful. TUIC then notified law enforcement.

On January 10, 2024, the UIC investigation revealed that the backup tapes in the missing lockbox contained confidential information belonging to certain individuals.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Trinity Universal reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license number, passport number, identification number, financial account number, payment card number, medical treatment information and health insurance information.

On February 9, 2024, Trinity Universal sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
