What Caused the Data Breach Affecting US Drug Mart Customers?

The U.S. Drug Mart data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. And, unfortunately, U.S. Drug Mart’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides only limited information on what led up to the breach.

However, at this point, we can confirm that U.S. Drug Mart recently learned about a potential data security incident impacting confidential information that had been provided to the company. We don’t know if this was a result of a cyberattack targeting U.S. Drug Mart or whether hackers obtained the information through a third-party data breach against one of U.S. Drug Mart’s vendors.

Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, U.S. Drug Mart reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, date of birth, Social Security number, address, driver’s license number and health information.

On November 17, 2023, U.S. Drug Mart filed notice of the breach with the Texas Attorney General, noting 12,940 victims in that state alone. Soon, U.S. Drug Mart will begin sending out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
