On June 30, 2023, Union Bank and Trust Company (“UBT”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of California after discovering that hackers exploited a vulnerability within software used by UBT. In this notice, UBT explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information that was stored within the affected software. Upon completing its investigation, UBT began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from Union Bank and Trust Company, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. While the UBT / MOVEit data breach did not involve UBT’s systems being breached, it did affect any UBT customer information that was transferred using the affected software. Thus, victims of the breach now face a significantly increased risk of identity theft and other frauds. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft as well as discuss your legal options following the Union Bank and Trust data breach. What Caused the Union Bank and Trust Breach?

The Union Bank and Trust data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, UBT’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on May 31, 2023, UBT was notified by Progress Software of a zero-day vulnerability within their MOVEit file transfer software. Although UBT’s letter doesn’t mention it explicitly, UBT must have used MOVEit to transfer certain confidential information.

Upon learning of the MOVEit vulnerability, UBT disconnected the software and launched an investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity specialists.

The investigation determined that the vulnerability identified in MOVEit was exploited. As a result, certain customer information that was stored within UBT’s MOVEit application was subject to unauthorized access on May 29, 2023.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Union Bank and Trust reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On June 30, 2023, Union Bank and Trust sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of which information of theirs was compromised.
