University of Hawaii Maui College Announces Recent Data Breach

On April 6, 2023, the University of Hawaii Maui College (“UH Hawaii College”) posted notice of a data breach on its website following a February cyberattack. However, UH Maui College has not yet disclosed the nature of the compromised data. What We Know So Far About the University of Hawai’i Maui College Breach

News of the University of Hawai’i Maui College data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from a post on the UH Hawaii website entitled “Data incident reported at UH Maui College.” According to this source, in mid-February 2023, UH Maui College detected unauthorized access to its computer system. In response, the school took its systems offline and enlisted the assistance of cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident and determine what, if any, student information was leaked.

The University of Hawaii Maui College investigation confirmed that certain files on the school’s IT network were subject to unauthorized access. It was also revealed that some of these files contained confidential information belonging to approximately 10,500 students.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, the University of Hawai’i Maui College began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. UH Maui College also instructed all staff to change their passwords to prevent future unauthorized access.

On April 6, 2023, the University of Hawai’i Maui College sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
