Practice/Organization Description
In 1974, three of Portland's best known business lawyers, Moe Tonkon, Morris Galen and Fred Torp came together to create a new, nine lawyer firm. Today Tonkon Torp is one of the largest firms headquartered in Oregon, with over 80 lawyers dedicated to a sophisticated business practice. Though the firm's size and practices have grown over the past 40 years, our core values of excellent legal work, leadership, client service and community involvement remain unchanged.
We pride ourselves on our responsiveness and the personal quality of our services, and we consider the goodwill of our clients and our professional reputation to be our most valuable assets. Tonkon Torp doesn’t try to be all things to all people. Although we provide a full spectrum of business law and litigation services, we believe our focus on efficiency and results is what sets us apart from other law firms. Clients view Tonkon Torp as a trusted adviser because our relationships are rooted in a thorough understanding of their business and industries and a shared vision of their goals.
The firm is known for its high ratio of experienced lawyers who are regarded as leaders in their field. We maintain exceptional capabilities in the areas of corporate finance and governance, financial institution and securities issues, mergers and acquisitions, taxation, executive compensation, government relations and public policy, labor and employment, real estate, business immigration, intellectual property, bankruptcy and restructuring, complex litigation, energy law, and wealth planning. In addition, we assemble strong teams to address many other areas of business law and litigation.
Tonkon Torp is committed to developing a workforce that is diverse and which represents the perspectives and experiences of our clients and communities. We strive to create an environment that is effective in recruiting, retaining and advancing diverse staff, law graduates and lateral candidates. In addition to our internal diversity committee, our lawyers and staff are involved in local, state and national diversity efforts.
We are very proud to promote and support a culture that encourages our lawyers and staff to be leaders in civic and professional organizations in our community. Our lawyers contribute a significant amount of time and effort to many community service organizations and regularly receive recognition for that work. Additionally, we donate hundreds of hours a year to pro bono efforts and the firm has received awards from both the Multnomah Bar Association and the Oregon State Bar for our pro bono service.
