With the spread of the novel coronavirus affecting everything from Summer Olympics to the availability of hand sanitizer and toilet paper, mitigating COVID-19 in the United States has become a growing concern.

As of Tuesday March 10th, all Castext employees are working remotely. We’re concerned about their health, and our work culture is already geared towards remote work, so the logistics around this decision were pretty easy. But for a lot of people, it’s not just the logistics that are the tough part. It’s adjusting to spending a large part of your day at home instead of around your colleagues in an office. So we asked some of our long-time remote employees for tips on how to make remote work effective, enjoyable and sustainable.

Let’s dig into 10 tips and best practices for working from home.

  1. Work out in the morning and take a shower before you start working.
  2. Fake it til you make it! Get dressed in professional clothes.
  3. Start work at a specific time in the morning every day.
  4. Take some time to plan your day and set tasks for yourself. Challenge yourself to be more productive each day.
  5. If you have the space, set up a defined working area in your home.
  6. To help avoid feeling lonely, take advantage of opportunities to talk to your coworkers over video chat. If you’re having trouble communicating or reading someone’s tone, hop on a quick 2 minute video call to talk it out. Communicating efficiently is the key to remote working.
  7. A quick, 10-minute walk (especially after lunch) can go a long way if you feel like you’re in a slump.
  8. Meditation during the day can help you reset. Music can help you concentrate as well as feel less isolated.
  9. If you and your partner are both working from home, take a few minutes to have lunch together.
  10. Have more check-ins with your team. This is a great time to bond with your co-workers and get to know them better.

Lastly, we know this is a difficult adjustment for everyone, and we would like to support our community. We understand that thousands of attorneys across the U.S rely on facilities such as law libraries, which may not be accessible for the time being. We want to help. During this time, we are providing free temporary access to Casetext for any attorneys who can’t access their usual legal research resources.
