2024 California March Primary Preview: Update on Open-Seat Elections

With ballots arriving California voters’ mailboxes, this alert provides a snapshot analysis of the open seats in the California Legislature for the 2024 primary. It’s worth noting that in the secretary of state’s pre-primary voter registration report, there was an uptick in Republican registration with the GOP gaining 46,000 registered voters statewide between October 2023 and January 2024. Democrats lost 30,000 voters statewide in the same timeframe and saw decreased registration advantage in just about every Assembly district in the state. “No Party Preference” voters saw a drop of about 70,000 voters. However, Democratic voters still outnumber Republican voters by over 22% statewide (approximately 9.1 million registered voters to 4.8 million).
