What Caused the Aetna Life Insurance Data Breach?

The Aetna Life Insurance data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. What we know is that Aetna filed notice with the Texas Attorney General, describing a data breach involving confidential consumer information that had been provided to Aetna. We cannot confirm that the incident was the result of a cyberattack against Aetna because it’s possible that hackers were able to access consumer information by orchestrating a cyberattack against one of Aetna’s third-party vendors.

Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Aetna Life Insurance reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, medical information, health insurance information and date of birth.
