On May 17, 2023, Benefit Management, LLC (“BML”) issued a press release announcing a recent data breach after learning that confidential patient information in the company’s care was subject to unauthorized access. Based on the company’s press release, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, diagnoses/conditions, health insurance information, medical information, claims information, prescription information, medical record number, and Medicare/Medicaid identification numbers. What We Know So Far About the Benefit Management Breach

News of the Benefit Management data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s press release. According to this source, on April 1, 2023, BML detected suspicious activity within an employee’s email account. In response, BML reported the incident to law enforcement and then commenced an investigation with the help of third-party data security specialists.

The BML investigation confirmed that an unauthorized individual had access to certain BML email accounts between March 14, 2022 and April 2, 2022. The company also learned that some of the emails and attachments contained in the breached account contained confidential information pertaining to BML customers’ patients.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, Benefit Management began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. BML completed this process on April 4, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, diagnosis/condition, health insurance information, medical information, claims information, prescription information, medical record number, and Medicare/Medicaid identification number.

Recently Benefit Management sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
