What Caused the Data Breach Affecting TTEC Healthcare Employees?

The TTEC Healthcare / BCBSIL data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, BCBSIL’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, BCBSIL provides health insurance coverage to various companies, including TTEC. On June 15, 2023, BCBSIL learned that certain employees’ sensitive information may have been inadvertently disclosed to an unauthorized party between September 19, 2022 and May 18, 2023.

In response, BCBSIL launched an investigation to determine the scope of the information involved and which employees were affected by the incident. BCBSIL determined that during a call handled by a BCBSIL vendor providing customer service, victims’ PHI may have been disclosed to an unauthorized individual. This was a result of vendor employees delegating their calls to non-vendor individuals.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, BCBSIL reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, date of birth, group number, subscriber number, address, phone number, claim number (DCN), medical service information and Social Security Number.

On September 5, 2023, BCBSIL Healthcare sent out data breach letters to all TTEC employees who were affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
