California AG Issues Stream of CCPA Compliance Letters

  • California AG Rob Bonta announced his office is conducting an investigative sweep of companies with popular streaming apps and devices in order to assess their compliance with the California Consumer Privacy Act’s requirements for businesses that sell or share consumer personal information, specifically the right of consumers to opt out of the sale of their data.
  • The CCPA requires businesses that sell personal information for use in targeted advertising to give consumers the ability to opt out. According to AG Bonta, the opt-out process must be easy and involve minimal steps; for example, consumers should be able to easily navigate to the settings menu and enable a “Do Not Sell My Information” setting.
  • AG Bonta’s office reportedly sent letters to a number of streaming businesses alleging failure to comply with the CCPA’s opt-out provision.
