Report on Supply Chain Compliance 2, no. 21 (November 7, 2019)
The deadline for compliance with a rule requiring truck drivers to use an electronic logging device (ELD) is Dec. 16, 2019. An ELD records information, which is centralized in a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) database, “Record of Duty Status.” The database allows for inspectors to quickly access data in one place, making it easier to uncover fraud and illegal behavior.
The FMCSA extended the deadline last year, from December to April 2018, but not this year.
“Everyone has to be prepared,” said Joe DeLorenzo,[1] FMCSA’s director of the Office of Enforcement and Compliance, at the EROAD User Summit 2019. EROAD is a provider of ELD software and other technology for fleet management and compliance. “It is not going to get extended again past December.”
An article in Commercial Carrier Journal[2] gives a brief overview of the status of an extension and includes a short list of common questions regarding ELD and logging procedures.
