Report on Supply Chain Compliance 2, no. 21 (November 7, 2019)
The U.S. Department of Justice indicted Peter Sotis[1] for alleged violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act[2] and the Export Administration Regulations.[3] Sotis failed to obtain a license for the export of a rebreather (a breathing apparatus that allows divers to stay underwater longer), and exported the equipment through a shipping company to Libya.
The DOJ and the U.S. Department of Commerce are cracking down on the export of dual-use items and items to designated entities. The increase in enforcement actions has companies investing in screening software and more resources for sanctions compliance programs and employee training.
