Parents whose children were born with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or certain other developmental disorders after being exposed to Tylenol or acetaminophen products during pregnancy may qualify to file a lawsuit and receive compensation.

Over the past several years, several studies have identified a link between the use of Tylenol or acetaminophen during pregnancy and an increased risk of autism or ADHD.

In the wake of these studies, hundreds of families whose children were diagnosed with these conditions have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers of these products.

Tylenol & Acetaminophen Linked to Autism and ADHD

For years, doctors recommended that women use Tylenol or acetaminophen instead of other pain relievers because they were believed to be safer. Experts estimate that about two-thirds of pregnant women have used Tylenol or generic acetaminophen while pregnant.

However, recent studies have shown that children whose mothers use products containing acetaminophen while pregnant may be more likely to give birth to a child with autism spectrum disorders or ADHD.

Studies published by the American Journal of Epidemiology, the National Institutes of Health, and the European Journal of Epidemiology between 2018 and 2021 all concluded that the use of Tylenol or acetaminophen products during pregnancy could increase a woman’s risk of giving birth to a child with autism or ADHD.

Hundreds of Lawsuits Filed Against Tylenol, Acetaminophen Manufacturers

Following the publication of these studies, hundreds of families whose children were born with autism or other developmental disorders have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers Tylenol and other medicines with acetaminophen.

Tylenol and products sold under the Tylenol label are currently manufactured by Kenvue, a consumer health products company with ties to Johnson & Johnson. Lawsuits have also been filed against retail chains that sell their own generic acetaminophen products, including CVS, Walmart, and Walgreens.

The lawsuits filed against these companies allege that they should have warned pregnant women that taking Tylenol or acetaminophen could increase the risk of lifelong developmental disorders for their children.

Who is Eligible to File a Lawsuit?

Children whose mothers used Tylenol, generic acetaminophen pain relievers, or other products containing acetaminophen during the second or third trimesters of pregnancy may be eligible to file a lawsuit against the manufacturers of these products.

In order to file a lawsuit, the child must be under the age of 20 and have been diagnosed with one of the following conditions:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Autistic Disorder
  • Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Kanner’s Syndrome
  • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)

Parents May Qualify to File a Tylenol Lawsuit

If you or a loved one used Tylenol or other products with acetaminophen while pregnant and gave birth to a child with autism or the other developmental disorders listed above, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit against the manufacturers of these products and receive compensation.

In order to begin the process of filing a claim, it is important to seek the assistance of an attorney with experience in pharmaceutical liability litigation.

An experienced attorney can help you determine whether you are eligible to file a lawsuit, gather the evidence and medical records that you may need to substantiate your claim, and guide you through the steps that are involved in taking legal action.
