The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 was signed into law by President Bush on October 3, as part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act. The Act amends ERISA and the Public Health Service Act by prohibiting group health plans (or health insurance coverage offered by such plans) from imposing more burdensome financial requirements for mental health or substance use disorder benefits than required for substantially all medical or surgical benefits covered by the plan.
